Incorporating essential oils into your yoga practice can help transcend your mind every time you roll out your mat. However, knowing which scents to start with and how to use them can be tricky.

One of our favorite tricks is to create a yoga mat spray featuring some of our favorite essential oil scents. This can be sprayed before your practice to help create a memory and after to make sure your mat is extra fresh for when you return.

Getting Started: You’ll Need A Few Things

Essential Oils. While scent is a personal preference, there are a few essential oils that provide added benefits to your practice:

  • Eucalyptus clears the mind, is great for headaches, and decongestion.
  • Lavender is naturally calming and can help relax your mind as you enter your practice.
  • Lemon or Lemongrass has antimicrobial properties, can help stimulate your senses, and help you hit the reset button.
  • Peppermint can help reduce stress and tension, while also improving mental function.

Witch Hazel. By incorporating this, you can use your spray as a natural cleaner as well. Witch Hazel is a distilled herb that has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

Water. Helps dilute any of the essential oils or witch hazel you use – and makes the spray last longer!

Spray Bottle. Last but not least, you’ll need a spray bottle to home your ingredients. I typically like to use a smaller 4 oz bottle so I can experiment with different oil combinations.

Method: Time to Make the Spray

  1. Combine 1/2 tablespoon of Witch Hazel and top with water until almost full
  2. Add in your desired essential oils – I typically like to use between 10-12 drops but feel free to adjust to your liking
  3. Shake it up and it’s time to spray
  4. Wipe clean using a towel and make sure your mat is completely dry before rolling it up or putting away
